The Executive Branch has to carry out laws that the Legislative Branch has passed. The Executive Branch is made of a bunch of different Departments. There are 15 main departments, and each of them focus on a specific topic. For example, there are departments for education, transportation, defense, energy, and many others. The President can not take care of all these departments alone, so he appoints a secretary to lead each department. The head of each department together make up the presidents cabinet. The people in the presidents cabinet help him make important decisions on how to carry out laws. Also in the Executive Branch are government organizations that focus on specific issues called, independent agencies. These are different than departments because they are not under the presidents control, and they are ran by a board or a commission. Now, onto an important question. What does it mean to "carry out a law"? Each law is different, so the way the law is carried out is different. For example, some laws are set to make things illegal and describe the consequence for the people who do them. Other laws, are to protect the people. The Executive branch is in charge of enforcing the law when people are not following them. There are several different ways to do this. The Executive Branch could educate the public on new laws, monitor the public, or even take the offenders to court. A Regulation is the rule the Executive Branch makes about how certain laws are to be carried out. Many of the departments are supposed to both enforce, and regulate laws put into place. Many citizens also rely on the Executive Branch for safety. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is apart of the Executive Branch and it is responsible for protecting the United States against threats. The Executive Branch does so many different things to keep the country running smoothly, and more people should appreciate that.
